Maximum hygiene is essential, and preventing bacterial contamination (like legionella) or the release of harmful substances is crucial. AISI 316L stainless steel is the best material to meet these standards, as confirmed by numerous studies. Unlike plastic, which can release chemicals, or iron, which is prone to corrosion, stainless steel offers a safe and reliable option. Even copper, though more resistant, can still oxidize. For new constructions or renovations, stainless steel pipes and fittings are the ideal choice for domestic water systems.

Gas Systems

While copper is commonly used for gas systems, stainless steel press-fit fittings offer several additional advantages. However, for the main distribution from the boiler to the apartments, rigid metal solutions are often necessary. In high-end projects or prestigious settings, stainless steel (AISI 316L fittings and AISI 316L or AISI 304 pipes) is recommended for its superior corrosion resistance and overall performance.

Hydronic Air Conditioning

The Rhinox Press fitting system is widely used for hot/cold air conditioning in industrial, commercial, hotel, and hospital settings. This system, which uses hydraulic circuits and fan coil terminals, offers several advantages over traditional split air conditioners, including the ability to integrate with renewable energy sources like solar panels and biomass boilers for eco-friendly solutions.

While both stainless steel and carbon steel can be used for circulating hot water, carbon steel is less suitable for chilled water. Condensation on its surface can lead to localized corrosion if insulation isn’t perfect. For this reason, stainless steel (AISI 316L or AISI 304) is the better choice, especially for chilled water applications.

Cooling Systems

In systems dedicated exclusively to heating, cooling is typically handled separately using gas or water solutions based on specific needs. In industrial settings, chillers that use chilled water are the most efficient and energy-saving option. For these systems, stainless steel pipes and fittings are the best choice due to their excellent corrosion resistance and durability. While carbon steel is more affordable, it requires perfect insulation because the chilled water can cause condensation, leading to potential corrosion if not properly managed. Stainless steel offers a more reliable and long-lasting solution for cooling applications.

Compressed Air Systems

The steel press fitting system is ideal for distributing compressed air, especially in industrial settings. Both carbon steel and AISI 316L stainless steel press fittings are suitable for this application, as they can handle temperatures from -20°C to +120°C and a maximum pressure of 16 Bar.

While carbon steel is more cost-effective, it’s crucial to ensure the air is moisture-free to prevent issues. AISI 316L stainless steel fittings with AISI 304 stainless steel pipes offer a slightly more expensive but superior alternative, providing better durability and resistance. In compressed air systems, where oil particles may be present, it’s recommended to use fittings with a specific FPM/FKM mix O-ring (red) if the oil concentration exceeds 5 mg/m³.

Fire Prevention Systems

Fire-fighting systems vary depending on the extinguishing agent—foam, air, or water with sprinklers. Traditionally, these systems are made with galvanized iron using welded joints, threaded connections, or groove fittings. However, for sprinkler systems, the Rhinox press fitting system offers an excellent alternative. Carbon steel is ideal for wet sprinkler systems, while 316L stainless steel works well for both wet and dry systems. 

Solar Thermal Systems

The future of construction, including plant engineering, is increasingly focused on environmental responsibility. For these systems, both AISI 316L stainless steel (suitable for any type of circuit) and carbon steel (only for closed circuits) can be used. Industrial Applications for Oily Substances

In industrial settings, systems for transporting oily substances like lubricating fluids or fuels are common. Both AISI 316L stainless steel and carbon steel press fitting systems are suitable for this purpose. However, carbon steel should only be used if the fluid is non-aggressive, the system is perfectly insulated, and air is completely absent. Refrigeration Systems
